picnic benchOkay, so the economy has caused you – like millions of other Americans – to have to make do with less than before. What if that turned out to be a good thing? It can! Here are some ideas to help you and your family actually live better with less.

Simplify your surroundings. Whether it’s your home, your workplace, or even your car, clearing out the clutter can help you think more clearly and feel more calm. Do you have more chairs, mugs, pencils, small tables, anything really, than you need or actually use? Look around you and see what you can get rid of. Give those things to someone who doesn’t have enough of them. Instead of going to your favorite restaurant, where the prices always seem to keep going up, enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch at a nearby park. The fresh air will positively rejuvenate you. Pack some simple, fresh foods to take with you. Lie on a blanket and soak up the sun’s healing rays. Plan your week so that you can spend your time – your most precious commodity – wisely. Try doing all of your errands one day per week, and plan your route. You’ll save on both time and transportation costs. Make fewer commitments; you can say no; it’s okay.

Need a break? Maybe you can’t have a vacation or go to a spa, but you can create your own spa atmosphere at home for little or no money. Look in Consumer Report’s Used Car Buying Guide for cars with the best repair records and gas mileage. Find a car on http://www.cars.com. When you find one you like, have your mechanic check it out and order a CARFAX report to make sure it’s in top condition.
Clean out your clothes closet! Give away what you don’t wear anymore. Keep the basics, the things you always wear. You’ll feel freer and lighter. Having a simpler closet will help you feel you have a simpler life. If you really feel you need something new, try your local thrift shop first.

Turn off the TV. You don’t need any entertainment budget at all; just spend some quality time with family or friends. The best times you’ll ever have in your life will be those spent with people you love. Make gifts for people instead of buying them. If you put your time and effort into making something for someone you really care about, the love you infuse into the object will be felt forever, by both the giver and the receiver.

For exercise, walking may be the best overall exercise for everyone, and it’s absolutely FREE. Walk briskly for at least 20 minutes a day if you can. Bring a friend. Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you.
